Moscow-backed authorities in Abkhazia reported 51 new cases of COVID-19, taking the tally of the total confirmed cases in the region to 11,520. 38 more patients have recovered, bringing the number of recoveries to 9,820. 2 more COVID-related fatalities were reported, taking the number of deaths in the region since the onset of the virus to 172. The number of active cases to date stands at 1,528.

Georgian Interior Ministry has revealed 644 cases of disobeying regulations imposed against the spread of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours. In particular, police have fined 80 citizens for defying isolation and/or quarantine rules, including those who violated the 21:00 – 05:00 curfew. 564 citizens were also fined for breaching face mask regulations.

Georgian Interior Ministry has revealed 815 cases of disobeying regulations imposed against the spread of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours. In particular, police have fined 127 citizens for defying isolation and/or quarantine rules, including those who violated the 21:00 – 05:00 curfew. 688 citizens were also fined for breaching face mask regulations.

Moscow-backed authorities in Abkhazia reported 58 new cases of COVID-19, taking the tally of the total confirmed cases in the region to 11,469 of which 9,782 have recovered. 2 more COVID-related fatalities were reported, taking the number of deaths in the region since the onset of the virus to 170. 14:05 GMT+4 – 13 New Cases Reported in Tskhinvali

Kremlin-backed South Ossetian authorities have reported 13 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the tally of the occupied region’s total confirmed cases to 2,869.

12:30 GMT+4 – Changes in Self-Isolation Policy for Incoming Citizens, Internationals

Economy Minister Natia Turnava announced changes to Georgia’s self-isolation policy for returning citizens, as well as for incoming internationals, scheduled to come into effect starting February 1, in parallel to the resumption of regular flights.

The mandatory self-isolation period for Georgian citizens returning to the country without a PCR test result has been cut from 12 days to 8. Citizens with a negative PCR test result upon arrival will have the option to get re-tested at their own expense three days after, fully exempting them from mandatory self-isolation should the PCR result be negative.

The Minister also noted that internationals will be able to freely enter Georgia by submitting proof of receiving two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine. Incoming foreign citizens who cannot present proof of vaccination must arrive with a negative PCR test conducted in the last 72 hours. However, they will be mandated to re-test three days after, with a second negative result exempting them from self-isolation.

Georgian Interior Ministry has revealed 837 cases of disobeying regulations imposed against the spread of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours. In particular, police have fined 127 citizens for defying isolation and/or quarantine rules, including those who violated the 21:00 – 05:00 curfew. 710 citizens were also fined for breaching face mask regulations.

Georgian Interior Ministry has revealed 637 cases of disobeying regulations imposed against the spread of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours. In particular, police have fined 98 citizens for defying isolation and/or quarantine rules, including those who violated the 21:00 – 05:00 curfew. 539 citizens were also fined for breaching face mask regulations.

20:00 GMT+4 – Georgian Foreign Minister Tests Positive for COVID

Georgian Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani, has tested positive for COVID-19. FM Zalkaliani wrote he is undergoing treatment at home “in compliance with all of the protocols.”

Kremlin-backed South Ossetian authorities have reported 41 new cases of COVID-19 over the last five days, bringing the tally of the occupied region’s total confirmed cases to 2,836.

Also according to the latest updates by Tskhinvali-based RES news agency, the total number of recoveries in the region stands at “nearly 1,800,” while “over 60 people” have died from COVID-related health complications since the onset of the virus.

13:00 GMT+4 – Occupied Abkhazia PM’s Health Condition Severe but Stable

The health condition of ‘prime minister’ of occupied Abkhazia Alexander Ankvab is severe but stable, Sokhumi-based Apsnypress news agency reported.

Ankvab tested positive for coronavirus on December 30 and was hospitalized on January 8 after developing bilateral interstitial pneumonia, sings of severe respiratory failure and drug-induced hepatitis. He was put on assisted ventilation on January 17, according to Apsnypress.

9:05 GMT+4 – School Resumes Nationwide

The educational process has resumed in general education institutions throughout Georgia.

According to the Ministry of Education, the educational process will still continue remotely in the following cities – Tbilisi, Kutaisi, Rustavi, Telavi, Zugdidi, Zestaponi, Gori, Poti, Marneuli and Gardabani, as well as in the Autonomous Republic of Adjara.

In all other schools, students will be able to return to classroom attendance. The Education Ministry noted that it has “fully provided” schools with “face masks, remote non-contact thermometers, dezo-barriers, and surface disinfectants.”

From October 15 Abkhazia has prohibited holding mass sports and cultural events. Moreover, theaters, museums, libraries, preschool educational institutions and recreational facilities were temporarily shut down, among other measures. Schools were also suspended following December 1.

The Parliament of Georgia approved amendments to the Tax Code as part of the pandemic-related anti-crisis tax relief package that was announced by Finance Minister Ivane Machavariani back in November 2020. New or extended/renewed measures include:

  • Starting on December 1, 2020, as in the period of May-October 2020, employers are exempt from paying income taxes for the  GEL 750 (USD 227) portion of the salaries of employees whose monthly wages in the same workplace do not exceed GEL 1500 (USD 455);
  • The relief measure effective for the accounting period of March 2020 – August 2020, allowing individuals to tax the fees for leasing services with VAT only in the accounting period of the factual payment, will also apply to the accounting period from December 2020 to May 2021;
  • The Finance Minister/Head of Revenue Services has the right to postpone income tax payment due in November and December 2020 for hotels/accommodation services in Georgia’s ski resorts till no later than July 1, 2021.
  • Certain economic activities, including hotel and accommodation businesses, restaurants and catering services, beverage services, touristic agencies and related activities will be exempt from income taxes that were to be declared in the periods of 2020 and 2021.
  • The taxpayers who benefited from income tax postponement through earlier relief measures and who pursue the above listed economic activities will be exempt from paying income taxes.

According to the Georgian authorities, out of 2,316 new cases, 961 were revealed in Tbilisi, the capital city, 420 in Imereti, 201 – Samegrelo – Zemo Svaneti, 185 – Kakheti, 154 – Shida Kartli, 142 – Kvemo Kartli, 125 – Adjara, 57 – Mtskheta Mtianeti, 40 – Guria, 16 – Samtskhe-Javakheti, 15 – Racha-Lechkhumi – Kvemo Svaneti. 

11:00 – 2,316 New Cases, 382 More Recoveries, 18 New Fatalities

Georgia has confirmed 2,316 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the tally of the total confirmed cases to 232,079. In the meantime, 382 more patients have recovered, taking the number of recoveries to 222,787. The number of COVID-19 related fatalities rose by 18 to 2,646. The number of active cases stands at 6,620.

20:00 GMT+4 – 133 New Cases, 155 More Recoveries, 1 Fatality Reported in Abkhazia

Moscow-backed authorities in Abkhazia reported 133 new cases of COVID-19, taking the tally of total confirmed cases in the region to 9,182. 155 more patients have recovered, bringing the number of recoveries to 7,027. 1 more COVID-related fatality was reported, taking the number of deaths in the region since the onset of the virus to 129. The number of active cases to date stands at 2,026.

18:30 – First Case of New COVID-19 ‘British Variant’ Confirmed in Georgia

National Center for Disease Control & Public Health (NCDC) has confirmed the first case of a new more rapidly transmissible COVID-19 strain initially detected in the United Kingdom in September.

According to the NCDC, the patient infected by the ‘British Variant’ of coronavirus is a man over 50, who is isolated and under satisfactory conditions. All the contacts of the patient are detected, while the contact person whose positive sample was found entered Georgia from a foreign country and has already returned there.

“The mutation detected in the United Kingdom has already been confirmed in more than 30 countries around the world. According to the existing data, it might be linked to an easier spread of the virus, however, does not affect the severity of the disease,” NCDC said.

According to the Georgian authorities, out of 594 new cases, 226 were revealed in Tbilisi, the capital city, 87 in Imereti, 64 – Samegrelo – Zemo Svaneti, 44 – Kakheti, 64 – Adjara, 24 – Kvemo Kartli, 20 – Shida Kartli, 20 – Mtskheta Mtianeti, 8 – Samtskhe-Javakheti, 32 – Guria, 5 – Racha-Lechkhumi – Kvemo Svaneti. 

11:25 – 594 New Cases, 1,963 More Recoveries, 25 New Fatalities

Georgia has confirmed 594 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the tally of the total confirmed cases to 229,763. In the meantime, 1,963 more patients have recovered, taking the number of recoveries to 222,405. The number of COVID-19 related fatalities rose by 25 to 2,628. The number of active cases stands at 4,704.

16:00 GMT+4 – 129 New Cases, 5 Fatalities Reported in Abkhazia

Moscow-backed authorities in Abkhazia reported 129 new cases of COVID-19, taking the tally of total confirmed cases in the region to 9,049. 5 more COVID-related fatalities were reported, taking the number of deaths in the region since the onset of the virus to 128. The number of active cases to date stands at 2,049.

According to the Georgian authorities, out of 417 new cases, 128 were revealed in Tbilisi, the capital city, 71 in Imereti, 45 – Samegrelo – Zemo Svaneti, 29 – Kakheti, 37 – Adjara, 33 – Kvemo Kartli, 32 – Shida Kartli, 24 – Mtskheta Mtianeti, 8 – Samtskhe-Javakheti, 9 – Guria, 1 – Racha-Lechkhumi – Kvemo Svaneti.

Georgia has confirmed 417 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the tally of the total confirmed cases to 229,169. In the meantime, 2,469 more patients have recovered, taking the number of recoveries to 220,442. The number of COVID-19 related fatalities rose by 31 to 2,603. The number of active cases stands at 6,173.

According to the Georgian authorities, out of 342 new cases, 183 were revealed in Tbilisi, the capital city, 42 in Imereti, 30 – Samegrelo – Zemo Svaneti, 28 – Kakheti, 20 – Adjara, 17 – Kvemo Kartli, 7 – Shida Kartli, 6- Mtskheta Mtianeti, 5 – Samtskhe-Javakheti, 4 – Guria. 

11:20 – Number of Active Cases Lowest Since Mid-October

Georgia has reported 342 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the tally of total confirmed cases to 228,752. In the meantime, 2,891 more patients have recovered, taking the number of recoveries to 217,973.  The number of coronavirus fatalities rose by 44 to 2,572. To date, the number of active cases stands at 8,181, the lowest figure since October 17.

11:30 – Breakdown of New Cases

Out of the 990 new cases, 426 were recorded in Tbilisi, the capital, while the western Imereti region came second with 167. As for the remaining cases: Shida Kartli – 83, Adjara – 72, Samegrelo – Zemo Svaneti – 68, Kvemo Kartli – 65, Mtskheta – Mtianeti – 29, Guria – 15, Samtskhe-Javakheti – 8, Racha-Lechkhumi-Kvemo Svaneti – 3. 

11:25 – 990 New Cases, 3,265 More Recoveries, 23 New Fatalities

Georgia has confirmed 990 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the tally of the total confirmed cases to 228,410. In the meantime, 3,265 more patients have recovered, taking the number of recoveries to 214,992. The number of COVID-19 related fatalities rose by 23 to 2,528. The number of active cases stands at 10,864.
