Sokhumi to Open ‘Embassy’ in Managua
Kremlin-backed Abkhaz leader Aslan Bzhania has signed an order on establishing an embassy in Nicaragua, Abkhaz “foreign ministry” reported on November 22.
Nicaragua was the first country after Russia to recognize the independence of Abkhazia, as well as Tskhinvali Region/South Ossetia, in the aftermath of the Russo-Georgian war of August 2008.
Tbilisi severed diplomatic ties with Managua in November 2008, in response to the recognition of Georgia’s Russian-occupied regions.
Besides Russia and Nicaragua, Venezuela, Nauru, and Syria are the only countries that recognize Abkhazia and Tskhinvali Region as independent, while Tbilisi and most of the international community regard the two regions as part of Georgia.
