Kremlin-backed Abkhaz authorities reported 592 new cases of COVID-19 in the occupied region, bringing the tally of the total confirmed cases to 43,929. The number of total COVID-related deaths reached 599, after the authorities reported a death of a woman in Sokhumi and four fatalities in Gudauta district on January 29-30. Meanwhile, 268 more patients have recovered, taking the tally of recoveries to 36,757. To date, there are 6,573 active cases in the region.

17:50 UTC+4 — General Practitioners to Monitor Covid Patients

Deputy Health Minister Tamar Gabunia announced today a change in protocol for managing Covid-19 cases, tasking general practitioners directly with monitoring their own patients with the virus. According to her, starting from February 1 patients can prioritize reaching out to their own doctors for COVID treatment. Previously, health authorities assigned doctors to the patients and also set up online COVID hospitals to this end.

In Russian-occupied Abkhazia, 16,622 people have received their vaccine jabs since the onset of the pandemic, according to Sokhumi-based Apsnypress agency. Among them, 6,929 were jabbed by single dose Sputnik Light vaccine. It is not clear how many in total are fully vaccinated as Kremlin-backed Abkhaz health authorities also use Sputnik V, that is administered twice.
