Russia Wants Georgian Army to Leave Kodori Gorge, Abkhazia

(Tbilisi. November 14. Civil Georgia) – Georgia must fulfill 1994 Moscow agreement on withdrawal of military units from Kodori Gorge (the only territory in breakaway Republic of Abkhazia controlled by the Georgian government), Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia announced on November 13.

Georgian officials made no comments concerning the statement of Russian MFA so far.

Additional units of Georgian army were deployed in the gorge on October 11. Georgian Defense Ministry stated then that these military units would implement defense operations in case of attacks from the Abkhazian side.

There were armed clashes between combined Georgian-Chechen guerrillas and Abkhazian military units in October on the territory of Abkhazia.
