Human Rights Organizations Criticize Georgian Authorities

(Tbilisi. November 22. Civil Georgia) – International Federation of Human Rights (FIDH) expresses its concern about recent facts of violation of human rights in Georgia. Facts of attacks on freedom of speech and freedom of religion are stated in the open letter of the Federation to President Eduard Shevardnadze.

The FIDH calls on the Georgian authorities to guarantee free exercise of the fundamental freedoms.

On November 9, international NGO Human Rights Watch also called on the Georgian President and the government to end religious harassment. “Georgian authorities have indulged the perpetrators of violence against non-Orthodox Christians for too long”, executive director of Human Rights Watch’s Europe and Central Asia division Elizabeth Andersen stated.
