Uneasy Situation in Pankisi – Shevardnadze Says

(Tbilisi, January 14, Civil Georgia) – “Situation in Pankisi gorge is uneasy, though there is no threat that situation will worsen,” President Shevardnadze stated in his traditional Monday radio broadcast on January 14.

Eduard Shevardnadze said that the criminals from different regions of Georgia are harboring in the gorge at the moment.

Georgian State Security Minister Valeri Khaburdzania admits that Pankisi gorge is no-go area for the Georgian authorities.

Population of several villages of Akhmeta region, where Pankisi gorge is located, protest demanding from law enforcement agencies to eliminate criminals’ activity in the gorge.

Two people remain detained by the kidnappers in the gorge at the moment.
