Shevardnadze Satisfied with the Operation in Pankisi

(Tbilisi, January 23, Civil Georgia) – President Shevardnadze is expressed gratitude towards Internal Affairs and State Security Ministries for successful operation in Pankisi gorge.

“The first stage of operation was successful and cause no tensions in the region,” Eduard Shevardnadze stated on January 23 at the government meeting.

President also thanked local Kist (Georgian citizens of Chechen origin) population of the gorge for assisting law enforcement agencies.

Special operation in Pankisi started on January 15. Yet no person suspected in abduction cases is arrested. Two Georgian citizens still remain detained by the kidnappers in the gorge.
