Reformers Collect Signatures for Preliminary Elections
(Tbilisi, January 24, Civil Georgia) – New National Movement, MP Mikheil Saakashvili is the leader of the party, initiated collection of signatures of Georgian citizens demanding preliminary Parliament elections.
200,000 signatures of citizens are needed to initiate parliamentary discussions over the constitutional changes.
Parliamentary faction Movement for Democratic Reforms, which represents the National Movement in the Parliament, failed to collect signatures of 118 MPs to start discussions over the issue. Only 36 MPs signatures were gathered in the legislative branch.
The issue of preliminary elections became significant after November 2001, when the mass protest demanded the government’s resignation.
