Part of Georgian Troops Left Kodori Gorge

(Tbilisi, February 20, Civil Georgia) – Georgian Defense Ministry reports on February 20, that part of its military units left Kodori gorge, the only territory in breakaway Abkhazia controlled by the Georgian government.

Only Georgian military instructors remain in Kodori, Defense Deputy Minister Gela Bezhuashvili stated.

Georgian side obliged to withdraw Defense Ministry’s military units from the gorge with the protocol signed on January 17 in Chuburkhinji, breakaway Abkhazia.

Abkhazian side took responsibility to guarantee security of the Georgian population living in Kodori gorge.

Additional forces of Georgian Defense Ministry, 350 soldiers were dispatched to Kodori last October, when armed clashes occurred between combined Chechen-Georgian guerrillas and Abkhazian military units.
