Shevardnadze Rules Out Prolongation of Presidential Term

(Tbilisi, March 25, Civil Georgia) – “I am categorically against the prolongation of the presidential term as it was proposed by some of the businessmen,” President Shevardnadze stated in his Monday radiobroadcast on March 25.

At the meeting with the influential businessmen on March 22 some of them stated that the prolongation of the presidential term at least for two years is necessary.

“These businessmen are the most important basis of our society and they should be supported,” President said.

The meeting with the businessmen was regarded in the Georgian political circles as the attempt to create new group that will be the President’s reliable political supporter.

The Citizens Union of Georgia party was Eduard Shevardnadze’s supporter until the collapse of the unity in the party.
