Trial Against NGO Attacker Suspect
(Tbilisi, Civil Georgia, July 25, 2002) – The trail begun in Tbilisi district court today against Giorgi Doinjashvili suspected in attack against human rights advocacy NGO Liberty Institute.
A gang of men stormed the Liberty Institute’s Tbilisi office on July 10, beating staff and destroying equipment.
The attacker suspect pled guilty at first though denied accusations later. The supporters of excommunicated orthodox priest Basili Mkalavishvili held a protest rally in front of the district court building demanding Doinjashvili’s release.
Liberty Institute is known for its activism in defending human rights of the minorities, which frequently stirred angry reaction of the religious fundamentalists, like Basil Mkalavishvili and political extremists.
