Pro-Governmental Party Tries to Register by Name of Burjanadze-Democrats
(Tbilisi, September 3, 2003, Civil Georgia) – The Burjanadze-Democrats election bloc, led by Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze and Zurab Zhvania, claim that government-backed persons have appealed to the Central Election Commission to register a different party for participation in parliamentary elections under the same name – the Burjanadze-Democrats.
“This is a government trick, which aims at m!
isleading voters on the eve of the parliamentary elections. These persons, who want to use our name, are linked with Governor of the Kvemo Kartli region, Levan Mamaladze [one of the leaders of the presidential-backed election bloc],” Vasil Maghlaperidze of the Burjanadze-Democrats told Civil Georgia on September 3.
A representative of the CEC, Lia Sovdagari, confirmed that the movement League of Intellectuals appealed to the CEC for registration under the name “Burjanadze-Democrats”.
“At the moment we are discussing the League of Intellectuals’ appeal to register them under the name ‘Burjanadze-Democrats’,” Lia Sovdagari told Civil Georgia.
