President’s Envoys Perform Duties in Adjara
President Saakashvili’s representatives at the Sarpi customs checkpoint and the Batumi port of the Adjara Autonomous Republic started to perform their duties after second attempt.
Vasil Sanodze and Davit Akhalaia arrived in Batumi on April 4 after the President signed the decree on the representatives’ responsibilities and duties.
“The situation has changed here. We have all conditions to work normally. It seems, the Adjarian authorities have understood that the President has the right to control the situation at the port of Batumi and the Sarpi customs checkpoint,” President’s representative to the Sarpi checkpoint Davit Akhalaia said.
Saakashvili’s representatives made the first attempt to perform their duties last month. However, the Adjarian authorities did not let them fulfill their duties. Adjarian leader Aslan Abashidze demanded formal decree of the President envisaging the representatives’ duties.
Mikheil Saakashvili and Aslan Abashidze agreed after talks on March 18 to appoint the President’s representatives to Adjara to monitor cash rich port and customs.
