MPs Vote Down Opposition’s Initiative on Pensions
The Georgian Parliament voted against an increase in pensions on April 27.
The initiative, from the opposition Democratic Front party and specifically MP Zviad Dzidziguri, envisaged an increase in pensions from the current GEL 38 to GEL 45, with an additional Lari for every year worked.
An additional GEL 202 million would have been required to cover the increased costs.
The majority, however, did not support the draft law, citing the falsification of employment records.
“We support only a fair increase in pensions,” Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee for Healthcare and Social Issues Gigi Tsereteli said.
