Foreign Trade Up By 37%

Georgia?s foreign trade turnover rose by 37.1% and was worth over USD 2.7 billion in the first half of 2007, the department of statistics said.


Exports reached USD 548.6 million, which is a 20.1% increase on the corresponding figure for the first half of 2006. Imports rose by 42%, exceeding USD 2.2 billion.


The share of trade with Commonwealth of Independent states is 37%, down from 41%. EU member states account for 28.7%.


Trade with Georgia?s main trading partner – Turkey ? doubled, exceeding USD 387 million.
Despite Russia?s trade embargo, the country still remains Georgia?s second largest trading partner with a turnover of up to USD 322 million. There has only been a 4.4% drop-off on last year?s corresponding figure.


With Ukraine soaking up most of the Georgian wine and spirits traditionally destined for Russia, it is now Georgia?s third largest trading partner. Exports to Ukraine were worth USD 263 million, up 42%. Imports from Ukraine nearly doubled, reaching over USD 225 million. Ukraine was the fifth most important trading partners in the first half of 2006 at USD 149 million.


Ferro-alloys constitute the number one Georgian export, followed by ferrous metal scrap and copper. Oil products and hydrocarbons, followed by vehicles and medicines top the list of imports.
