Still No Clarity over ‘Crashed Aircraft’

It is still not possible to confirm that an aircraft crashed in upper Kodori Gorge, as a search operation has produced no results, an Interior Ministry official said on August 27.

“There is nothing new in this regard, but the search operation is continuing. It is, however, unknown, when it will be over,” Shota Utiashvili, the chief of the analytical department of the Interior Ministry, told Civil.Ge.

Meanwhile, the chief-of-staff of the breakaway region’s armed forces, Anatoly Zaitsev, said on August 27 that the probe into the circumstances of the allegedly crashed unidentified aircraft is still underway.

“The situation will only be clarified after a number of days. We hope, that we will be able to give well-defined answers to the existing questions,” Zaitsev said in comments posted on the Abkhaz leader’s website.

The Abkhaz side has claimed a Georgian aircraft crashed in upper Kodori Gorge.

Georgia claims unidentified aircraft several times violated its airspace from the Russian side over Tbilisi-controlled upper Kodori Gorge in Abkhazia on August 21, 22 and 23. In the latest incident on August 22, the Georgian Foreign Ministry said, Interior Ministry personnel responded in accordance “to the established procedure and then fired warning shots.”
