Tskhinvali Gears Up for ‘All-Ossetian Assembly’

South Ossetian secessionist leader Eduard Kokoity met with his government colleagues to discuss preparations for the All-Ossetian Assembly to be held in Tskhinvali on September 18-19, the South Ossetian Press and Information Committee reported on Monday.

This will be the sixth assembly of this kind and the first one to be held in the breakaway South Ossetian capital.

The assembly is a high-profile event for the South Ossetian secessionist authorities, as it will be used to demonstrate what they call broad-based support among ethnic Ossetians. This is particularly important against the background of intense rivalry with the Tbilisi-backed South Ossetian provisional administration.

“The assembly is capturing the interest of ethnic Ossetians from all over the world,” Yuri Morozov, the prime minister in the secessionist government said. “It has a huge importance.”

Ossetians living in different parts of Georgia gathered on July 22 in the Georgian-administered village of Tamarasheni and expressed support for the provisional administration of South Ossetia, led by Dimitri Sanakoev.
