Bagapsh Comments on Saakashvili’s Statement
Abkhaz leader Sergey Bagapsh said that Abkhazia was an independent state and would resist President Saakashvili’s plans for Georgia’s reunification.
President Saakashvili vowed on September 29 that Georgia would be unified before his term in office expired. Saakashvili’s first term in office expires next year; he will then seek reelection for a second five-year term.
“Let Mikheil Saakashvili unite Georgia from the Inguri River or even deeper in its own territory, to the borders with Armenia and Azerbaijan,” the Abkhaz leader’s website quoted Bagapsh as saying on September 30. “We, as good neighbors, will only welcome it, if Saakashvili does not finally ruin his country.”
Speaking at the official ceremony marking the 14th anniversary of the breakaway region’s independence on September 30, Bagapsh said that “unfortunately, Georgia had not changed for the better.”
“It is obvious that Georgia’s military plans still remain in place… However, we are ready for all eventualties,” Bagapsh said.
