Medvedev Pledges Further Support for Abkhazia
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has pledged to render further assistance to Abkhazia to ensure security and economic development, the Kremlin reported on September 30.
In a letter of congratulations on the occasion of Abkhaz Independence Day, Medvedev said that Russian recognition of Abkhazia’s independence, the establishment of diplomatic relations, the signing of a treaty of friendship and cooperation “lays the foundation for the formation of a legal framework for bilateral relations on a long-lasting and equal basis.”
“I am sure that these moves, which are dictated by the interests of our peoples, will promote the strengthening of peace and stability in the Caucasus,” Medvedev said.
The Abkhaz separatist authorities celebrate so-called Independence Day on September 30. Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov, Russian government officials, as well as delegations from breakaway South Ossetia and Transdnestria will attend.
