U.S. Embassy on 10th Anniversary of Russo-Georgian War
The United States Embassy in Georgia issued today a statement on the 10-year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Georgia, saying the U.S. would continue supporting the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“Ten years ago today, Russia invaded the sovereign nation of Georgia. The conflict resulted in hundreds of casualties, displaced thousands of civilians from their homes, and marked the start of a devastating occupation of 20 percent of Georgia’s territory,” the Embassy said.
The Embassy also noted that the displaced have not been able to return to their homes, and “residents of the occupied territories have been cut off from the country’s remarkable economic and political progress of the past decade.”
“We will continue to work together with the Government and the people of Georgia and with our friends and allies to ensure the world’s continued support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders. Georgia, we are with you,” the U.S. Embassy concluded.
A number of other countries have denounced the Kremlin actions in Georgia, including the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Sweden, Ukraine and the United Kingdom. A joint statement was issued by the Group of Friends of Georgia uniting eleven OSCE participating states.
