Red Cross Identifies Remains of 23 Abkhazia, Russo-Georgian War Victims

The remains of 23 people, who had been missing since the 1992-1993 war in Abkhazia and the 2008 Russo-Georgian war, have been identified, according to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

ICRC told Civil.ge today that this includes 12 ethnic Georgians and three ethnic Abkhaz missing since 1990s, as well as seven ethnic Georgians and one ethnic Ossetian missing since 2008.

The identification was carried out within the framework of the coordination mechanism, established with the ICRC support in 2010 for the purpose of identifying the persons missing as a result of the armed conflicts.

According to ICRC, remains of over 500 persons have been recovered, around 200 of which have been identified and handed over to their families. ICRC estimates that over 2,300 people, including military and civilians, remain unaccounted for.
