New Prison Chief Appointed in Tskhinvali after Alleged Inmate Abuse
Anatoly Bibilov, Moscow-backed leader of Tskhinvali Region/South Ossetia, has appointed Alan Guchmazov as head of correctional services of the “ministry of justice” – in charge of overseeing prisons – after sacking his predecessor due to an alleged case of inmate abuse, “RES” news agency reported on June 8.
As stated by Tskhinvali media, Otar Margiev, former warden of Tskhinvali jail was suspended from his job on June 8 after several inmates inflicted self-injuries protesting prisoner abuse by jail personnel on June 5.
A group of inmates’ parents met with Bibilov on June 5, pleading to look into the abuse case, “RES” wrote.
Against the backdrop of the ongoing prison controversy, the same media outlet reported on June 8 that four locals were arrested after attacking a private residence belonging to Tskhinvali’s “justice minister.”
