The Caucasus Research Resources Center (CRRC) Georgia released a report today on public opinion in Georgia on the public health crisis. The report covered a wide range of issues from disinformation to support of the Government’s coronavirus policies and food security.
According to CRRC data, the vast majority of Georgians supported the vast majority of the policies which the Government implemented during the crisis.
The public’s assessments of the performance of a wide range of institutions became more positive during the pandemic, with Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia’s approval roughly tripling compared with November/December 2019, CRRC noted.
The study also found that “between a third and a quarter of the population lost a job during the crisis” and median household incomes roughly halved. The majority of households experienced at least some level of food insecurity during the pandemic, CRRC added.
CRRC Georgia also highlighted that the public favored opening up the economy rather than exercising caution. The report also found that few people believe that there will be a second wave of the virus and that there would be less support for the government’s imposed restrictions on different freedoms if a second wave occurred.
The report stressed that misinformation was present but not widespread during the crisis, with 9% of the public believing that 5G infrastructure spreads the coronavirus. There is widespread misinformation around vaccines in Georgia, it added.
Importantly, regarding the Orthodox Church’s Easter Liturgy controversy, the report revealed that only 4% of Georgian Orthodox Christian believers attended Easter Vigil, as opposed to 44% the year before;
In this regard, the report added that Orthodox Georgians also tend to disapprove of the Church’s policy on the shared Communion Spoon.
In particular, 33% of Orthodox Christians approved of the communal spoon policy, 43% disapproved, and 21% were uncertain. Interestingly, older people (55+) are more disapproving of the policy (51%) than younger people (39%), CRRC stated.
