16:00 GMT+4 – Georgia Opens Sinopharm Vaccination Registration

The Ministry of Health today opened registration for vaccination with the Sinopharm vaccine for all persons over the age of 18, while the inoculation process with the Chinese-developed vaccine is expected to start in early May.

Georgia received 100,000 doses of Sinopharm on April 3. On the same day, the Georgian Health Ministry highlighted that vaccination with Sinopharm would begin only after the vaccine receives the World Health Organization’s authorization, which has not happened to date.

12:00 GMT+4 – Wizz Air Renews Regular Flights to Warsaw, Vilnius

Low-cost airline Wizz Air renewed regular flights from the western Georgian city of Kutaisi to Warsaw and Vilnius, performing a flight in each of the two destinations once a week. The number of weekly flights is planned to increase in accordance with the epidemiological situation.

Starting from May, the airline is also expected to renew flights to Riga and Dortmund, while from June, regular flights will gradually become available to an additional 13 destinations in Europe.

Deputy Health Minister Tamar Gabunia announced today that Georgia will open registration for receiving Sinopharm vaccine come April 27, while the inoculation process with the Chinese-developed vaccine is expected to start in early May.

Georgia received 100,000 doses of Sinopharm on April 3. On the same day, the Georgian Health Ministry highlighted that vaccination with Sinopharm would begin only after the vaccine receives the World Health Organization’s authorization, which has not happened to date.

The World Health Organization on April 8 delivered humanitarian cargo to the Russian-occupied Abkhazia region, including COVID-19 tests, oxygen concentrators, medical gowns, and pulse oximeters, Sokhumi-based Apsnypress news agency reported today.

16:30 GMT+4 – AstraZeneca Vaccine to Be Used Only in Over 55 Age Group

Deputy Health Minister Tamar Gabunia announced that vaccination with AstraZeneca vaccine in Georgia will continue exclusively in the age group of 55 or older.

The decision follows a report released yesterday by the European Medicines Agency, which stated that the AstraZeneca vaccine may have a “possible link” with blood clots. “So far, most of the cases reported have occurred in women under 60 years of age within 2 weeks of vaccination,” the EU medicines regulator said.

The Georgian authorities have restricted renting out space for mass entertainment and social events. The government decree obliges rental space owners to take all reasonable measures preventing the use of the space for large-scale gatherings, including by inputting a preventive clause in the rental contract. In addition, the owner of the space is obliged to immediately notify relevant agencies upon receiving information about a violation.

Georgia has confirmed 464 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the tally of the total confirmed cases to 283,833. In the meantime, 454 more patients have recovered, taking the number of recoveries to 274,599. The number of COVID-related fatalities rose by 7 to 3,811. The number of active cases stands at 5,397.

22:00 GMT+4 – 23 New Cases, 87 More Recoveries Reported in Abkhazia

Moscow-backed authorities in Abkhazia reported 23 new cases of COVID-19, taking the tally of the total confirmed cases in the region to 13,510. 87 more patients have recovered, bringing the number of recoveries to 12,992. With a total of 214 COVID-related fatalities recorded, the number of active cases to date stands at 304.

According to the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health (NCDC), a total of 9,735 persons have been vaccinated for COVID-19 since Georgia initiated vaccine rollout on March 15.

According to the Georgian authorities, out of 580 new cases, 331 were confirmed in Tbilisi, the capital city, 26 in Shida Kartli, 56 – Imereti,  50 – Samegrelo – Zemo Svaneti, 51 – Adjara, 17 – Guria, 22 – Kvemo Kartli, 10 – Kakheti, 10 – Racha-Lechkhumi – Kvemo Svaneti, 6 – Mtskheta-Mtianeti, 1 – Samtskhe-Javakheti.

Georgia has confirmed 580 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the tally of the total confirmed cases to 283,369.  In the meantime, 215 more patients have recovered, taking the number of recoveries to 274,145. The number of COVID-related fatalities rose by 6 to 3,804. The number of active cases stands at 5,394.

10:30 GMT+4 – Georgia Receives 100,000 Doses of Sinopharm Vaccine

A batch of 100,000 doses of the Chinese Sinopharm coronavirus vaccine arrived in Georgia this morning. According to Deputy Health Minister Tamar Gabunia, vaccination with the Chinese vaccine will commence after it receives authorization from the World Health Organization (WHO).

With a total of 214 COVID-related fatalities recorded, the number of active cases to date stands at 368.

13:10 GMT+4 – COVID Checkpoints Set Up in Three Villages

The Georgian authorities have set up coronavirus checkpoints in three villages – Igoeti, Samtavisi, and Kvemo Chala – located in the Kaspi Municipality of the eastern Georgian Shida Kartli region. Those entering and exiting the villages must undergo mandatory thermal screening, as well as testing if necessary. However, no other travel restrictions have been imposed. A total of 30 Cases of COVID-19 were reported in the Shida Kartli region today.

13:00 GMT+4 – Vaccination Registration Open for Citizens Over 55

According to Deputy Health Minister Tamar Gabunia, today, starting from 18:00, citizens over the age of 55 will be able to register to receive COVID-19 vaccination. Registration is currently only available for medical personnel and citizens over the age of 65.

Kremlin-backed South Ossetian authorities have reported 13 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the tally of the occupied region’s total confirmed cases to 3,320. 6 more patients have recovered, taking the number of recoveries to 2,945.
