U.S. Donates Half Mln COVID Vaccines to Georgia

The United States has donated half million Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines to Georgia. The largest-ever shipment of western-made vaccines to Georgia arrived in Tbilisi International Airport in the early hours of July 24.

Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Garibashvili expressed on Twitter “deep gratitude to [the President of the U.S. and] the US government, our main strategic partner, for the generous donation of Pfizer vaccines.”

The Prime Minister, together with Health Minister Ekaterine Tikaradze and U.S. Ambassador Kelly Degnan were present in Tbilisi International Airport as the shipment arrived in the Georgian capital. 

“We are very pleased to be able to present these life-saving vaccines as a gift to the people of Georgia, as part of our strategic partnership,” said U.S. Ambassador Kelly Degnan.

The registration for getting U.S. donated Pfizer vaccines will begin on July 24, while the jabs will be administered starting from Monday, July 26.

The White House announced the plan to donate millions of COVID-19 vaccines globally, including for Georgia, in early June.

Georgia initiated vaccine rollout on March 15. As of July 23, a total of 391,781 persons have received at least a single dose of coronavirus vaccine, with 136,734 persons beeing fully vaccinated. The country is currently administering China-made Sinopharm and Sinovac vaccines, as well as Oxford/AstraZeneca and Pfizer/BioNTech jabs against COVID-19.

The Georgian health authorities reported 2,460 new cases of COVID, 1,082 more recoveries and 20 fatalities on July 23, with the tally of total confirmed cases reaching 398,081, among them 370,565 recoveries and a total of 5,656. The number of active cases stands to date at 21,834.
